About

Join members of Gateshead University of the Third Age - who have recently co-curated exhibitions at the gallery - as they take you behind the scenes at the Shipley. Featuring a new selection of paintings for 2016, this is a chance to see some of the artwork in the Shipley’s collection which is not currently on public display. You’ll learn about a range of artworks by well-known and lesser-known artists, and see how the paintings are looked after when they’re not being exhibited in the gallery.

Following the tour – which lasts about an hour - we’ll visit William C. Irving’s 1903 painting The Blaydon Races. Filled with boisterous activity and fascinating detail, the characters in the world famous Geordie anthem, 'The Blaydon Races' are brought to life in this popular painting. Find out more about this intriguing scene and its inhabitants, and enjoy refreshments in the gallery.

Please note: the tour takes place in the gallery’s stores which have low lighting and occasional steps. Stools are available for those who prefer not to stand. The tour is not suitable for wheelchairs.
