About

Back by popular demand

Whether you know Gateshead well or wonder what it looked like in the past, come down to this big screen presentation of archive film footage of the area.

The footage includes rare colour films of people ‘holidaying at home’ in Saltwell Park during World War II; street parties celebrating V.E Day; issues of town planning in the 1960s and the building of the ‘Get Carter’ shopping centre and car park.

Spanning the 1930s to the early ‘70s, these films were originally researched to provide short clips for the Shipley’s Saltwell Park Museum gallery. This is an expanded presentation that has been specially curated for this event by filmmaker Julie Ballands, who will introduce the films and give an insight into the journey of rediscovering Gateshead’s film heritage.

This event is delivered in partnership with North East Film Archive which provided all the footage and images.

There will be an interval with refreshments and a chance to look around the exhibitions.

Suitable for all ages.
